The arm-lifts are a different matter altogether, although I do not make an issue out of this with Tom. I hope, in fact, that because he did not get so physically involved with the arms as with the face, he may have forgotten I had this done at all. But I had it done, I know, and I certainly have the scars to prove it.

Six months later, they have faded, but not much. One year later, I have to face the truth. This arm-lift operation leaves me worse off than when I started. Having wanted to be able to wear strapless dresses and short-sleeved tops, I am now absolutely condemned to long-sleeve blouses and dresses. The nearest I can get to an exposed evening dress is one with that chiffon stuff – and even then, I have to use concealing make-up on my two arms.

The removal of the hair-bearing section of my armpit does seem to have a number of advantages, not least the fact that I no longer have to use a depilatory or wax there. In addition, it seems to have done away with the need for deodorant. That’s about the sum total of the positives, however. Not only are the scars unsightly, but my right arm has healed in a bumpy way, and both scars seem to be battling gravity, so they are like drawstrings pulling against the skin, creating little v-shaped wrinkles all the way up my arm. In addition, directly below each scar the area has gone soft and flabby, so that the result is actually misshapen. It may not be as bad as it was, in sag terms, before the surgery, but in several other terms, it is worse.

Am I sorry I did it? Yes.

What am I going to do about it? Probably go back to Dr Brueck and say, “Look at it this way, mate. I am not blaming you, because I should have checked all the possible outcomes before I went for this. But, now that I have experienced it and it isn’t great, how about going in again, pulling the scar a bit more down round the back, going the full length with the incision so there isn’t this soft bit at the end, and seeing if we could achieve a pair of acceptable arms?”

If I did that, then I might – a year or so down the line – look at the possibility of scar reduction, whatever that is.
